Today we will discuss the difference between a 1864 & 1864 L Indian Head penny.
The L was Added later in the year and has a much lower mintage then the 1864.
The 1864 L carries a higher premium then the 1864. Lets diagnose the two coins. The focal point will be the Indian head bonnet & the tip of the Indian nose. In the reference picture below, look at the two bust. The 1864 with the 'L' is pointed. The 1864 without the 'L' is rounded. Now look at the 1864 penny with the 'L', the indian bonnet, the part of the bonnet behind the neck you, will see a side ways 'L'. So remember the focal points for this coin and you will never go wrong. Happy coin collecting! By the way my dad was a wizz a picking up focal points like this on many coins. Try to remember these points on each series of sets you collect. It soon will become natural and you will not even know that you are doing it!!
